Carbon-Negative Biochar

Biochar, the core of our house plant soil mix, enhances the soil’s nutrient and water retention.

It also improves soil porosity (which enables plant roots’ development and prevents root rot).

This creates the best conditions for your houseplant to flourish!

Each ton of biochar produced captures three tons of CO2 from the carbon cycle, preventing it from contributing to climate change.

This makes it an ideal, Earth Positive soil amendment — unlike conventional houseplant soil ingredients like peat moss, coconut coir (coco coir), perlite, and vermiculite.

Plant Based Compost

Our aged compost adds abundant organic matter to the indoor plant soil mix, improving the soil structure and drainage.

It’s also a natural source of essential plant nutrients, like nitrogen and potassium. This reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, which acidify soil and harm soil microbes when used excessively.

More broadly, composting upcycles organic waste that normally goes to landfills and emits greenhouse gasses.

Root Boosting Mycorrhizae

Mycorrhizae (mahy-kuh-rahy-zee) are houseplant friendly fungi that create a beneficial fungal structure on plant roots.

How does that help?

It improves your plant’s ability to absorb water and nutrients, allowing them to make the most of our fertile indoor potting soil.

Moreover, mycorrhizae release a gum-like substance called glomalin that helps to further lock in moisture and nutrients.

Rosy soil is easy to use, even for beginners. Just follow these four steps:

Step 1: Pre-Moisten

Pre-moisten your Rosy indoor potting mix before adding it to your pots.

You can do this by adding the soil mix for indoor plants into a separate container and watering it until it releases a few drops when squeezed.

Step 2: Pot or repot

Fill the base of a well-draining container with the pre-moistened indoor soil mix.

Step 3: Plant

Slowly release your houseplant from its current soil, loosening the root ball and removing any soil debris. Then, set the plant into the container with Rosy indoor potting soil mix.

Finally, fill the space with more Rosy, leaving an inch at the top for easy watering.

Step 4: Water

Water the indoor pot soil thoroughly from the top until the excess water drains through the drainage hole.

For future waterings, we recommend bottom watering (by placing the pot or container in a tray with water), so the soil absorbs the water evenly. You can occasionally top water to flush salts or minerals accumulated in the soil.

At Rosy, our entire supply chain has a net negative carbon footprint!

How?

We maintain an eco-friendly system (from production to delivery) by curating the most sustainable ingredients (like biochar), packing processes, and shipping.

In fact, every bag of Rosy indoor mix captures more than 2 kg of CO2 from the carbon cycle.

So, our house plant potting mix is a positive resource for your indoor garden and the environment.

FAQs

To make an indoor plant potting mix, you need to create a blend of ingredients that improve soil aeration, drainage, and nutrient retention.

This can include:

Biochar

Compost

Worm castings (earthworm castings)

Coarse sand

Pine bark

Perlite

Vermiculite

Pumice

Coco coir

Peat moss

Synthetic fertilizer

But some ingredients, like sphagnum peat moss and synthetic fertilizer, can be unsustainable and harmful to your indoor container plants.

That’s why it’s better to buy eco-friendly bagged soil (not the traditional ones in garden centers) professionally blended for potted plant growth, like Rosy.

No, you shouldn’t use regular potting soil or garden soil for indoor plants.

These soils are fine for outdoor plants and vegetable gardens. But topsoil or potting soil containing sphagnum peat moss can cause soil compaction and root rot in container plants.

Plus, they may house harmful insects like fungus gnats (gnats) and mites.

That’s why it’s better to use a houseplant potting soil, like Rosy indoor potting mix. It’s a fertile and airy potting mix with well-draining soil — perfect for potted plant growth.

Check these two things when looking for the best potting soil for indoor plants:

Ingredients: Look for amendments that add nutrients and enhance soil structure. However, avoid mixes with sphagnum peat moss (even "sustainably harvested" peat) and other unsustainable ingredients.

Type of soil: Look for a houseplant mix that meets your plants’ needs. You can find options for high water retention (moisture control), seed starting, and other indoor plant potting soil requirements.

Being mindful of these aspects can help you choose the perfect indoor plant soil mixture for your garden.

Rosy’s indoor potting soil is all-natural, peat free, and professionally blended.

We’ve consciously sourced our ingredients not only because they’re perfect for your plants but also because they’re good for our planet

Unlike traditional potting soil ingredients that are environmentally taxing, our biochar potting mix only contains natural and carbon-negative amendments.

Read additional information about Our Mission.

We use carbon-negative, organic ingredients to create the best indoor plant potting mix.

Typically, these organic materials are sent to a landfill, where they release methane and CO2 — two potent greenhouse gases. But by redirecting these organic materials from landfills and stabilizing their carbon structure, we prevent the release of those greenhouse gases.

Essentially, we turn our house plant soil into a carbon sink. So, it removes more CO2 from the air than it releases — making our soil Earth Positive.

Discover more about what we mean by Earth Positive on Our Mission page.

Peat moss is a soil amendment that facilitates moisture retention.

However, its extraction from peat bogs harms our planet. In fact, the peat moss industry accounts for 5% of total global CO2 emissions. (More than twice the airline industry!)

Plus, it can lead to soil compaction as it decomposes over time.

So, we’ve opted for planet-friendly ingredients like biochar and compost to stand in for peat in our indoor potting mixes.

Yes! You can add Rosy to your current houseplant potting soil — whether it’s an inorganic or organic potting soil mix, cactus or orchid mix, or otherwise.

Doing so will help you refresh your old soil and revive its benefits for plant care.

Alternatively, you could directly replace your current houseplant soil mix with Rosy.

You can use Rosy indoor soil for plants like:

Tropical plants (monstera, money tree, ZZ)

Philodendron

Pothos

Trailing plants

Ferns

Succulents (snake plant, aloe vera)

Why is it the best soil for these plants?

Rosy is a well draining potting soil, offering an optimal balance of drainage and moisture retention. Plus, it’s fertile and supports beneficial microbes, which help your indoor plant thrive.

Our 8 Quart bag of Rosy indoor potting mix will fill:

4 to 6 medium 6" pots

Our 4 Quart bag of Rosy indoor potting mix will fill:

2 to 3 medium 6" pots

And unlike traditional indoor potting mixes, you won’t need to replace the soil every year due to compaction.

Great Soil

Great indoor potting mix that helped give a failing sub-tropical plant the right amount of loamy soil it needed to thrive. Also love that it's carbon negative and the helpful, friendly customer service. Would recommend!

Happy Plants

I repotted as many plants as I could with my Rosy Soil, and those that are in Rosy Soil are visibly healthier! I also love that I'm using biochar instead of peat. I can't wait for my next shipment to arrive so that all of my plants can be happy!!!

Repotting my plants

I received my FIRST order on Saturday. The bag was huge! I repotted my neanthe Bella palm and she is adjusting nicely. Then I used the rest to repot a huge sansevieria that I received last month and which was rootbound. This soil was extremely easy to work with and I managed to transfer my sansevieria into a larger pot with no difficulty. I appreciate the time which the team has taken to answer all of my questions regarding this soil. I am highly recommending and will definitely purchase again

Love this soil!!

I got a bag of Rosy just in time to repot a few plants. Loved it so much that I ordered two more bags. I absolutely loved how well my plant babies adjusted, there was no stress or plant shock. They have been rocking it out in Rosy soil for a good 3-weeks now, still doing great and even have new growth on a few.
