FAQ

Why is Rosy Soil made without peat moss?

Orchids are epiphytes—they don’t want to live in a soggy bog. Peat bogs are also vital carbon sinks, so we skip the peat and use sustainable, regenerative ingredients instead.

How is Rosy different from other soils?

Rosy’s indoor potting soil is all-natural, peat free, and made from biochar.

We’ve consciously sourced our ingredients not only because they’re great for your plants but also because they’re good for our planet

Unlike traditional potting soil ingredients that are environmentally taxing, our biochar potting mix only contains natural and carbon-negative amendments.

Read additional information about Our Mission.

How is Rosy Soil Earth friendly?

We use carbon-negative, organic ingredients to create the best indoor plant potting mix.

Typically, these organic materials are sent to a landfill, where they release methane and CO2 — two potent greenhouse gases. But by redirecting these organic materials from landfills and stabilizing their carbon structure, we prevent the release of those greenhouse gases.

Essentially, we turn our house plant soil into a carbon sink, which means it helps to remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

Discover more about what we mean by Earth Positive on Our Mission page.

What is biochar?

Biochar is nature’s soil supercharger — a form of carbon that’s created by heating organic material (like wood or plant matter) in a low-oxygen environment.

Think of it as a sponge-like charcoal made for plants. It improves soil structure, helps retain water and nutrients, and creates a thriving home for beneficial microbes. It’s also incredibly stable, meaning it stays in the soil for hundreds (even thousands!) of years — all while capturing and storing carbon that would otherwise enter the atmosphere.

Unlike peat moss, which is strip-mined from delicate wetlands, biochar is regenerative and climate-positive. It’s science-backed, time-tested, and foundational to everything we do.

What makes this mix “orchid perfect”?

Orchids like to hang out on trees in the wild, not in dense, soggy dirt. Our mix mimics their natural habitat—super airy, chunky, and alive with microbes.

Can I mix Rosy with my old orchid substrate?

Absolutely. Refresh your old mix or go all-in with Rosy for the full tropical VIP treatment.

How many pots will a bag of Rosy Soil fill?

Our 8 Quart bag of Rosy indoor potting mix will fill:

4 to 6 medium 6" pots

Our 4 Quart bag of Rosy indoor potting mix will fill:

2 to 3 medium 6" pots

And unlike traditional indoor potting mixes, you won’t need to replace the soil every year due to compaction.

Peat-Free & Eco-Friendly

Every bag captures CO₂ and helps fight climate change. Unlike most potting mixes, Rosy Soil is free from peat, plastics, and synthetics — making it safe for your plants and the planet.

Us vs Them

Not all soil is created equal — and what’s in the bag really matters.

Most traditional soils rely on peat moss — a non-renewable resource mined from fragile wetlands. It’s harmful to the planet, and not great for your plants either. Peat compacts over time, repels water when dry, and can even invite pests.

At Rosy, we’ve created something better. Our soil is powered by biochar and crafted from high-quality, regenerative ingredients that nurture your plants and help heal the planet.

Because if it’s not Rosy... it’s just dirt.
