FAQ

Why is Rosy Soil made without peat moss?

Peat moss has been a common ingredient in commercial potting mixes since the 1960s. However, it's obtained by extracting peat bogs, which are vital ecosystems that store carbon. At Rosy, we believe there's a better way. So, we've developed our blends with alternatives that are effective and sustainable.

How is Rosy different from other soils?

Rosy’s indoor potting soil is all-natural, peat free, and made from biochar.

We’ve consciously sourced our ingredients not only because they’re great for your plants but also because they’re good for our planet

Unlike traditional potting soil ingredients that are environmentally taxing, our biochar potting mix only contains natural and carbon-negative amendments.

Read additional information about Our Mission.

How is Rosy Soil Earth friendly?

We use carbon-negative, organic ingredients to create the best indoor plant potting mix.

Typically, these organic materials are sent to a landfill, where they release methane and CO2 — two potent greenhouse gases. But by redirecting these organic materials from landfills and stabilizing their carbon structure, we prevent the release of those greenhouse gases.

Essentially, we turn our house plant soil into a carbon sink, which means it helps to remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

Discover more about what we mean by Earth Positive on Our Mission page.

What is biochar?

Biochar is nature’s soil supercharger — a form of carbon that’s created by heating organic material (like wood or plant matter) in a low-oxygen environment.

Think of it as a sponge-like charcoal made for plants. It improves soil structure, helps retain water and nutrients, and creates a thriving home for beneficial microbes. It’s also incredibly stable, meaning it stays in the soil for hundreds (even thousands!) of years — all while capturing and storing carbon that would otherwise enter the atmosphere.

Unlike peat moss, which is strip-mined from delicate wetlands, biochar is regenerative and climate-positive. It’s science-backed, time-tested, and foundational to everything we do.

Can I add Rosy to my current potting soil?

Yes! You can add Rosy to your current houseplant potting soil — whether it’s an inorganic or organic potting soil mix, cactus or orchid mix, or otherwise.

Doing so will help you refresh your old soil and revive its benefits for plant care.

Alternatively, you could directly replace your current houseplant soil mix with Rosy.

How many pots will a bag of Rosy Soil fill?

Our 8 Quart bag of Rosy indoor potting mix will fill:

4 to 6 medium 6" pots

Our 4 Quart bag of Rosy indoor potting mix will fill:

2 to 3 medium 6" pots

And unlike traditional indoor potting mixes, you won’t need to replace the soil every year due to compaction.

Soil Mates: Plants That Love This Mix

Our Cactus & Succulent Soil is blended for fast drainage and dry-loving roots — perfect for cacti, succulents, and other plants that thrive on less water. It's ideal for those who love the look of desert plants or tend to be a little heavy-handed with the watering can.

Cactus & Succulent Soil favorites include Aloe, Jade, Echeveria, Haworthia, Zebra Plant, Panda Plant, Burro’s Tail, Agave, and Hens and Chicks.

Classic desert cacti such as Prickly Pear, Bunny Ear, Barrel Cactus, and Golden Torch flourish in it too.

It’s also a great match for drought-tolerant houseplants like Snake Plant (Sansevieria), ZZ Plant, Ponytail Palm, and Yucca.

And for moisture-sensitive favorites like Hoya, Pilea, and String of Pearls, the added drainage helps prevent overwatering and supports stronger root health.

Good Soil Isn't A Miracle

Ready to Use - Plant Care Made Easy

No mixing, no amendments, and no guessing. Our pre-blended soil is optimized for all houseplants, so even new plant parents can pot with confidence.

Nutrient Dense, Living Soil

Scientifically blended for lush, thriving plants — with biochar to improve nutrient retention, drainage, and long-term soil health. Your plants grow better because your soil is better.

Peat-Free & Eco-Friendly

Every bag captures CO₂ and helps fight climate change. Unlike most potting mixes, Rosy Soil is free from peat, plastics, and synthetics — making it safe for your plants and the planet.

Us vs Them

Not all soil is created equal — and what’s in the bag really matters.

Most traditional soils rely on peat moss — a non-renewable resource mined from fragile wetlands. It’s harmful to the planet, and not great for your plants either. Peat compacts over time, repels water when dry, and can even invite pests.

At Rosy, we’ve created something better. Our soil is powered by biochar and crafted from high-quality, regenerative ingredients that nurture your plants and help heal the planet.

Because if it’s not Rosy... it’s just dirt.

Cactus are now growing like weeds

I couldn't get my cactus seeds to grow further than sprouting. I replaced some of the soil they came with to the Rosy cactus and succulent sail and they took off! Before and after pictures are attached. This product is very easy to use. Genius that the bag is easily resealable!

GREAT dirt mix for cactus and succulents!

This is a great dirt replacer for starving succulents! It's made mine green up and I can actually see a little bit of brown disappearing. I have had this one little cactus for about 10 years now that has grown LONG and reaching for more dirt. It's made me sad. I have also looked a few times for a good dirt but never purchased any. My first thing I loved was that the bag was Resealable! I have so many kinds of dirt that spill all the time in my greenhouse and I WISH they were all resealable. This was a really sandy, grainy texture but mixed with potting soil, maybe? I covered my poor little cactus up (the cat had emptied some out also) and also add some to my other succulent. I wanted to give it some time and water it to see if I noticed anything. After about a week and a half, my starving cactus definitely had more green to it and some of the brown was looking for yellow, so it's slowly healing. I don't know how far it will go but I would definitely recommend. It drains well and is apparently full of nourishment for these kinds of plants.

Like the regular Rosy Soil mix, the Cactus and Succulent Mix was a pleasure to use. I love that the packaging has so much useful info. I’ll be purchasing both products again.

Obsessed

The quality of Rosy Soil is truly unmatched. I trust their ethos. When I saw they had a cactus + succulent mix it was no brainer to purchase.

I've got rescue plants, props and my OG's in this mix and so far I'm seeing growth and a stress free plant fam. Keep the goods coming, Rosy!
