FAQ

Why is Rosy Soil made without peat moss?

Peat moss has been a common ingredient in commercial potting mixes since the 1960s. However, it's obtained by extracting peat bogs, which are vital ecosystems that store carbon. At Rosy, we believe there's a better way. So, we've developed our blends with alternatives that are effective and sustainable.

How is Rosy different from other soils?

Rosy’s potting soil is all-natural, peat free, and made from biochar.

We’ve consciously sourced our ingredients not only because they’re great for your plants but also because they’re good for our planet

Unlike traditional potting soil ingredients that are environmentally taxing, our biochar potting mix only contains natural and carbon-negative amendments.

Read additional information about Our Mission.

How is Rosy Soil Earth friendly?

We use carbon-negative, organic ingredients to create the best indoor potting mixes.

Typically, these organic materials are sent to a landfill, where they release methane and CO2 — two potent greenhouse gases. But by redirecting these organic materials from landfills and stabilizing their carbon structure, we prevent the release of those greenhouse gases.

Essentially, we turn our soil into a carbon sink, which means it helps to remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

Discover more about what we mean by Earth Positive on Our Mission page.

What is biochar?

Biochar is nature’s soil supercharger — a form of carbon that’s created by heating organic material (like wood or plant matter) in a low-oxygen environment.

Think of it as a sponge-like charcoal made for plants. It improves soil structure, helps retain water and nutrients, and creates a thriving home for beneficial microbes. It’s also incredibly stable, meaning it stays in the soil for hundreds (even thousands!) of years — all while capturing and storing carbon that would otherwise enter the atmosphere.

Unlike peat moss, which is strip-mined from delicate wetlands, biochar is regenerative and climate-positive. It’s science-backed, time-tested, and foundational to everything we do.

Can I add Rosy to my current potting soil?

Yes! You can add Rosy to your current potting soil — whether it’s an inorganic or organic potting soil mix, cactus or orchid mix, or otherwise.

Doing so will help you refresh your old soil and revive its benefits for plant care.

Alternatively, you could directly replace your current soil mix with Rosy.

How many pots will a bag of Rosy Soil fill?

Our 8 Quart bag of Rosy Herb Soil will fill:

4 to 6 medium 6" pots

Our 4 Quart bag of Rosy Herb Soil will fill:

2 to 3 medium 6" pots

And unlike traditional potting mixes, you won’t need to replace the soil every year due to compaction.

Nutrient Dense, Living Soil

Scientifically blended for lush, thriving plants — with biochar to improve nutrient retention, drainage, and long-term soil health. Your plants grow better because your soil is better.

Peat-Free & Eco-Friendly

Us vs Them

Not all soil is created equal — and what’s in the bag really matters.

Most traditional soils rely on peat moss — a non-renewable resource mined from fragile wetlands. It’s harmful to the planet, and not great for your plants either. Peat compacts over time, repels water when dry, and can even invite pests.

At Rosy, we’ve created something better. Our soil is powered by biochar and crafted from high-quality, regenerative ingredients that nurture your plants and help heal the planet.

Because if it’s not Rosy... it’s just dirt.

A close to the perfect formulation for growing culinary herbs as I've seen

For years I ran a popular blog about indoor herb gardening. One thing my years of experience taught me was that all soils are not created the same when it comes to growing herbs. Yes, a generic bag of potting soil will be cheaper than this one. But this is no ordinary potting soil. Some of the highlights:

- This formulation contains low, gentle nutrient levels which herbs like basil, thyme, parsley, sage, and oregano prefer. Most bagged potting soils are far too rich for herbs which results in them appearing to grow lush but end up flavorless and bland with much less essential oils.

- This formulation contains Mycorrhizae, a beneficial organism that helps expand the root system, improve the uptake of phosphorus (something else important for flavor), and helps herbs tolerate drought (good for someone like me who sometimes forgets to water for too long).

- The Biochar helps aerate roots and hold nutrients. Other soils can become compact and hold too much water, which herbs hate.

- The worm castings provide gentle, plant-friendly nutrition and encourage microbial diversity. Again, the key to flavorful herbs isn't overloading it with fertilizer, but supporting steady, moderate growth which worm castings are ideal for.

- Finally, the inclusion of pine bark provides additional airflow to the roots and prevents soil from becoming too compact.

Comparing this to standard garden soil (which often retains far too much water) or garden soil formulated for vegetables (which…

Pest free, works well, good balance

The Rosy Soil Herb Mix is an excellent choice if you're looking to give your indoor or outdoor herbs a real boost. The mix feels fresh and doesn't have any of those weird, unwanted smells you sometimes get with organic soils. It's a blend of biochar, worm castings, and compost, which hits that perfect balance of holding enough moisture while still letting the roots breathe.

One of the best things about this soil is that it's peat-free and naturally less prone to pests. It’s a huge relief to find a soil that doesn't come with an accidental side of gnats or other insects. Plus, the ziplock-style bag is super convenient for clean storage and keeping pests out between uses. After using it for a month, it's clear this mix really helps with strong root development and growth.

Great drainage, but the biomass is not micronized enough for my preference.

This is an interesting product and my favorite part is that it drains really well. I also enjoyed trying it as it is a luxury product as far as soils go. As I do a lot of gardening, I typically buy soil yearly by the cubic yard and might supplement it by a few bags of specialty products such as sphagnum moss, manure mix or perlite - sold at cubic feet. But, this stuff is sold by the quart. so it is pricier.

My favorite aspect of this soil is the percolation. It drains really well. My least favorite aspect is the charcoal to dirt mix balance. I really don't like products that have too much dirt as they tend to have too much moisture infiltration and not enough porosity (pore space). This is the opposite. This one had a bit too much pore space due to the large chunks of charcoal (biochar). It is similar in texture to a bag of soil amend that often has large wood chunks used for macropores and moisture regulation. This uses biochar to create a similar effect; and in some ways it is nice that it creates structure and aeration without creating a risk of nitrogen drawdown. Note that I don't actually think nitrogen drawdown is a risk, unless your burying sawdust into your garden - but it is a popular concern/fad now so it is important to address that this product sidesteps the whole issue by creating macropores and good percolation using biochar instead of wood and thus has less chance of nitrogen drawdown. The drawback of the carbon chunks is that it is for me much too bulky for…

Expensive but really nice soil

This Rosy Soil may be expensive, but boy does it work fast! I have been wanting to grow indoor basil for some time now and this specialty herb mix seemed perfect for the job. I spread quite a few seeds of basil around in case germination rate wasn't great but I sure didn't need to! With a spray bottle I kept the top soil moist and within 3 days I had a ton of sprouts. So quick! I have recently culled most of the sprouts, leaving three in a triangle formation in hopes to give them each decent root real estate. I've had issues in the past with fungus gnats, but so far so good with this mix! It drains extremely fast and seems to dry out faster than other mixes. I really look forward to my first basil harvest!

Well balanced components for herbs

This soil looks amazing and it seems like my herbs are liking it.

I had a few rooted herbs (oregano, rosemary, and thyme) that needed to be potted and I decided to get this soil for them, one thing I noticed right away is that the soil stays moist but not waterlogged, and that helps a lot to keep those plants happy.

Also the balance of the components of it is excellent, exactly what most herbs love. I wish the price was a bit more affordable , that’s why I took one star off, other than that, everything is excellent about this product!
